About the event
Raku is a Japanese style of ceramics dating back centuries. It creates exciting, interesting and often unexpected results. Special raku glazes are applied to pre-made pottery pieces. The pieces are fired very quickly, then removed from the kiln while red-hot. They are placed on flameable material and covered, creating a reduction atmosphere. This causes the glazes to react very differently to normal firings, resulting in beautiful and random results.
Come along and have a go. WPS holds regular public raku sessions throughout the year. Everyone is welcome, you don't need to be a member to have a go.
To take part, just turn up and purchase a ready make piece of pottery. After applying raku glazes, the team will fire your piece. The entire process takes around an hour.
Pieces vary in price from $5 - $10. Proceeds from public raku support the Whanganui Potters Studio.
